What is success and does it make us happy? by Esther Loopstra

What is success?

I’ve been thinking a lot about the word success. What is success and does it really make us happy? A lot of "successful" people don’t feel fulfilled when they reach their goals. Have you ever achieved a goal and then felt like it just wasn’t enough?

Many times we measure success by what we see others doing or by what other’s will think about us. We compare ourselves and then say “They look successful, I want to do that!” This can be good, because it can give us a goal to shoot for, but it also can be dangerous because we loose sight of what is actually important to us. And we forget to embrace the real reason we began doing something in the first place.

The gift of creativity by Esther Loopstra

Creative freedom is a gift

Sometimes I will post a quick note on my Instagram feed and it will give me an idea for writing to you all. A while back I snapped this picture and I wrote "This is one of my favorite items. My grandpa made this spool holder for my grandmother's sewing room. I remember staring at it when I went to sleep in that room when I visited them. It now is in my studio, reminding me of the creativity that flows from each generation to the next. It's like a gift that keeps expanding and growing, each generation builds on the challenges, freedoms and vulnerability that the past generations have opened up for us."

6d9ae01c-c0b5-4bcd-86d7-d1d7af8d732a.jpg

I was lucky enough to have a family that supported my creativity in many ways. My Grandfather was a woodworker and I have many of his pieces in my home. My father painted with oils and I remember thinking he was he could make anything because he was always coming up with ideas on how to fix things or make interesting creations. In the summer when I would declare "I'm bored!!" He would drive me to the craft store and we would stand in the isle saying "what do you want to make?".

Giving a person, especially at a young age PERMISSION to have creative expression is so important. It's a way for us to share a deep part of ourselves with the world and get what's inside of us out. It feeds our soul. And passing down that freedom is truly a gift.

What gifts have you given your kids or have you been given? Did someone teach you how to write, bake, crochet or dance? It may have been a teacher, mentor or friend. Maybe your parents weren't supportive of your creative aspirations. Maybe you've had to fight to free yourself from rules of what "art" should be. Maybe you're still working on letting yourself explore that side of your soul. The more vulnerability you can access in this lifetime, the more of yourself you will be able to share with the world and the more free the next generation will be.

Like the generations before us fought for civil liberties, some of our parents and grandparents had to work against pressures of social norms to reach the depths of their expression. Sometimes I have students in my class who's parents are designers or artists. It can be incredible to see the amount of knowledge and freedom they have in creating. I honestly get a little jealous of friends who's parents or grandparents were free spirited artists, writers or thinkers. They have an ease in the way they are able to get into an open mode and express themselves.

But, it's never too late to step into your legacy. Push yourself past your self-induced boundaries and explore what you are drawn to. It will be rewarding for you, but also for your children, students or friends. I don't have kids but finding this freedom in myself and then sharing what I know with my students is one of the most rewarding things in my life.

Who can you give the gift of creativity to? How can you give that gift to yourself and begin to share it?

Explore Deep Looking Drawing by Esther Loopstra

explore deep looking drawing.jpg

This week I'd like to share with you one of my absolute FAVORITE books for finding your Creative Voice and letting go of anxiety around drawing. The Drawing Mind by Deborah Putnoi is full of short exercises that can help you silence your Inner Critic and explore who you are and how you draw. Even if you haven't drawn in a long time or don't consider yourself an artist, this book will guide you in your journey.

Deborah has one exercise that she calls "Deep Looking Drawing". If anyone has done contour drawing before you will recognize this way of seeing and drawing. The guidance is to look at an object and describe it with your pencil without looking at your paper. Try to connect deeply with the essence of that object . Keep your eyes on the object and draw every detail you see with a continuous, loose line and without lifting your pen or pencil off of your paper or looking at your page. As Deborah says, "Trust your eyes, trust your hand". The results can be very interesting.

This exercise is not about drawing something perfectly, it's about letting go and exploring. Here are some things that deep looking / contour drawing can do:

  • It trains your brain and our hand to work together
  • It's a practice in SEEING. We often are so busy with our day to day lives that we don't take time to see and notice all of the incredible details of a plant or our hand. But there are so many interesting things to discover when we take the time.
  • It can help you if you are feeling like you are in a rut, to get out of your thinking mind and explore something new.
  • Help to loosen you up before any creative endeavor.
  • Connect to a deeper part of the world or yourself.
  • It could spark a new idea. Who knows what new path this kind of drawing will lead to. One of my artist friends Jude Buffum creates these kinds of drawings everyday and they've become more and more detailed and developed over time.

The results can be unexpected but also, more expressive than anything that we can try to create when we are holding our pencil very tightly and trying to get every detail just right. This allows us a certain freedom that we sometimes lack in our other work.

In the book, Deborah uses the Deep Looking technique along with other techniques to help you explore the world around you and inside of you. She builds on each technique and has you use them in a variety of exercises.

These images are from a friend who had just undergone surgery to remove a tumor from her pituitary gland. As long as I've known her she has suffered from a variety of ailments and had gone to a myriad of doctors and specialists, no one could figure out what was wrong. Recently, someone suggested that she might have something called Acromegaly, which is when a tumor on the gland causes the growth hormones in your body to increase. She was recovering from her surgery and I gave her this book to pass the time.

I was floored by the images that came out of her. There is a prompt in the book that asks you to close your eyes and draw your face. My friend said she said she just drew what she saw, sometimes with her eyes closed and sometimes with them open. When I look at these drawings, they feel so powerful to me. They might not be the way my friend normally draws, but there is something very freeing and relatable in the movement of the drawing. It's as if she is sharing a bit of her soul with us.

This way of drawing could lead to a whole new way of seeing and interacting with the world! I encourage you to pick up a copy of The Drawing Mind or just begin Deep Looking drawing or Contour Drawing for yourself. Drop me a line and let me know how it works for you!

Want to feel more free? by Esther Loopstra

59cc8c11-efb4-415f-80ac-f83d520730af.jpg

Whenever I get feedback from students who have taken my courses it thrills me. I love hearing about their personal experiences and how much the classes effect them. I've had students tell me that my Creative Voice courses have changed their lives and I believe it!

Getting free of negative thinking in your artistic pursuits can help you immensely in other areas of your life.  There is something very healing about creative expression and embracing the artistic, soulful part of ourselves can have incredible benefits to us in general.

Here is an excerpt from an e-mail that a recent student of my Finding your Creative Voice E-Course sent to me:

"Thanks for a fun and engaging class. I really enjoyed playing with the materials that I had and definitely feel inspired and more creative as a result. The ideas you presented to me are still percolating but I can see where they're going to be really wonderful in inspiring me to be creative in my life. There's nothing more relaxing than playing with our materials after a stressful meeting when I just need to release the pent-up nervous energy. Thank you for setting my creativity on its path to freedom."

In the course, we use a sketchbook to capture ideas and inspiration. Tuning into your intuition is key to setting yourself free of all of those "should" thoughts that creep into our lives! This is one of her intuitive drawings.

This is her final project. In my Finding your Creative Voice E-Course, I will take you all the way through the creative process from finding your own inspiration, to playing and exploring with the materials and then I show you how to create a final piece of art from all that you've discovered. The result is uniquely you and just the beginning of Finding your Creative Voice!

Learning to trust our intuition by Esther Loopstra

59cc8c11-efb4-415f-80ac-f83d520730af.jpg
blog (9.5).jpg

How can we get in touch with our intuition or our sense of inner knowing?

Trusting ourselves is a huge part of being able to be free while creating. Many of us feel stuck because we can't get passed the fear of creating something or doing something "wrong". People (including me!!) can get paralyzed with the fear of not knowing what to do next. This can relate to the next brush stroke or the next large move in your life.

I think that many of us have so lost touch with our inner wisdom that we are constantly looking to outside sources for what is the "right" thing to do when I believe it's within all of us all the time! The problem is that we don't feel comfortable dwelling in the place of trust within ourselves, in fact, it feels very uncomfortable because we are afraid of making mistakes. So we try to follow all these "rules" in order to get us where we want to go, in our art or in our life. It's safer to choose a path someone else plans or to take a painting class where you just paint exactly what the instructor tells you to.

Don't get me wrong, many rules are beneficial. But once we know the rules, we must also learn to break them and follow the creative voice inside of us that knows our truth and that makes us unique. So how can we get back in touch with that sense of knowing? How can we teach ourselves to be more comfortable in a place without rules or boundaries, but where we are following our own inner guidance?

Many times when people tell you how to get in touch with your intuition, it's the same old "be quiet and listen to yourself" suggestions. But how do we actually do that in a practical everyday way that can train our brain to feel more comfortable in the playful, intuitive part of itself?

Here are few ideas I came up with from my life that all RELY on listening to what you want.

These might sound silly or trite, but I think anything like this is an opportunity to get in touch with what you like, want and need. And those things are all parts of your unique, creative self. Simple, everyday things like these (or you can make up your own ideas) will help us little by little to get used to trusting our gut:

Carve out some time with no plans

We are so busy all the time. Everyone I know is busy. Even on my days off I plan every minute of the day. But lately, I've really been trying to carve out at least a few hours (a whole day would be amazing!) with nothing to do. If you have a day or a morning, wake up and think to yourself...."what do I FEEL like doing?" Your mind will probably be going crazy and want to plan, plan, plan but try not to get ahead of your next step. Once you've drank your coffee or gone on a run or watched Gilmore Girls, think about the next thing you feel like doing....and so on. I know, this seems like such a luxury to most of us. But if you can give yourself just one morning or evening a week where you are intentionally listening to yourself and following your own guidance, it will feel AMAZING, like you've given yourself a gift.

Cook

Cooking can be either really stressful or it can be fun, enjoyable and super creative. It can be one of the best ways to practice listening to yourself. Even before I begin cooking I like to connect with how I'm feeling and ask myself what I would LIKE to eat. And it's strange that my intuition kicks in when I'm cooking and I will most of the time have a gut feeling about how much of a seasoning to add or when something is done in the oven, even though I haven't set the timer. This is very strange because for a long time I thought of myself as a terrible cook. But, the more that I began to think of it as an adventure, the more fun it became. If you fail, it's not a big deal, it's a learning experience!

Go shopping

I talk about this a lot in my Finding your Creative Voice Course... shopping is a great way to get to know your Inner Artist. Because if you have time, you can really think about what you like. What are you drawn to? What kind of shapes, patterns, styles are you naturally attracted to. You don't actually need to buy anything. You can just window shop and walk through the store listening to that voice inside of you saying "that is really interesting". Everyone is so unique that we all like different things...that is what makes up your unique self. Following that guidance can eventually translate into finding your own style in your art.

Go to a museum

This is similar to the shopping experience. Go to a museum and listen to yourself and what kind of artists or art you like. Do you know why you like it? What kind of style is it? What kind of colors do you enjoy? Trust that it's ok to not know why you like something...you just do. And trust that you don't have to like a painting just because it's famous. For instance, in general, I do not like art with a soft atmosphere, like most impressionism or things created with pastels. I like bold colors, dark line and intensity. It translates to my own art as well! Finding out what you enjoy about other artists and listening to yourself is so important in finding your own creative voice.

Intuitive drawing, painting, free-writing, journaling or music making

In my classes and workshops we do a lot of Intuitive drawing, painting and writing because it basically trains us to follow our body and inner guidance in order to create in a way that comes naturally to us. If we do this regularly, it help us to trust ourselves and what we naturally create and not rely so much on what we feel like we should be making.

Dancing

Moving your body to music can be the perfect solution to getting out of your head and into a place where you can trust yourself. Even if you think you can't dance, you can sway or move your body along with the beat and get a sense of your inner guidance leading you. Even here, our self conscious mind can get in the way but if you can try to put that aside and just trust your instincts, it can be really fun. Think about how babies dance when they are just learning to walk! There's so much joy in watching kids just follow that inner voice.

These are just a few practical things that I've notice help me to connect with my inner knowing and intuition on semi-consistent basis. While you are doing them, try to be present in the moment and listen to your body and try to connect at least a little bit with your gut reaction. However faint that voice is now, it still needs your love and attention. The more you listen to it, the more it will grow and nourish you.

What tricks do you have to get in touch with your intuitive side?
